SeMA Journal best paper award

The SeMA Journal Best Paper Award intends to promote the publication of high quality scientific papers and reviews in Applied Mathematics. All papers published in the SeMA Journal during the previous year are elegible for the prize. The prize carries a cash award of 1500 Euros and a diploma.

Older versions of this prize, before the SeMA Journal was established, were the  Premio de Divulgación, awarded from  2000 to 2008, and the  Premio al mejor artículo del Boletín de SeMA, in  2009-2010.

In this edition the scientific paper “A unified analysis of algebraic flux correction schemes for convection–diffusion equations” has been awarded the SeMA Journal best paper prize 2018. This paper, published in the 75th volume of SeMA Journal, has been written by Gabriel R. Barrenechea, Volker John, Petr Knobloch, Richard Rankin, researchers of the University of Strathclyde of Glasgow, Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics Berlin, the Charles University of Praga and the University of Nottingham Ningbo, respectively.

This work is contextualized on the numerical analysis of algebraic flux correction (AFC) related to finite element schemes for scalar convection–diffusion equations. A general form of the method is presented using a link between AFC schemes and nonlinear edge-based diffusion schemes. Then, specific versions of the method, that is, different definitions for the flux limiters, are reviewed and their main results stated. Numerical studies compare the different versions of the scheme.
